Recreation Connectors in The Learning Village work with Greater Forest Lawn (GFL) area families to help link them to recreation activities, complete registration forms and, when needed, access fee subsidies.
This one-on-one approach builds understanding, nurtures trust and reduces barriers including language, financial or transportation issues that families may face in accessing recreation activities for their children.
A Recreation Resource Guide also provides parents with an easy guide to available opportunities.
Family Fun Fairs
With help from partner agencies and service providers, The Learning Village host twice-yearly Family Fun Fairs. These free community events held within a GFL area school include activities, entertainment, free food, sport equipment give-a-ways and draw prizes. Twenty-five service providers and local agencies attend with their displays and information about sports, camp, arts and music activities.
Many of the programs showcased are available free or at low-cost. The enthusiastic representatives engage with families and help them to register their children. Fee-subsidy information and translators are available too. Our next Family Fun Fair will be in spring 2012 and we’ll share details here, once the date and location is confirmed.
Diversity Cup
Diversity Cup is a weekend soccer tournament hosted by the Calgary Police Service Diversity Resources Unit and supported by CLVC resources. Typically close to 400 children to participate in the yearly two-day weekend tournament. The event builds community spirit as it brings teachers, parents, community members and numerous volunteers together to engage families and children in physical activity.
